Human Resources Manager
Location: Baltimore, MD
Schedule: 4 days in-office, 1 remote
Salary: $90,000-$110,000
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to build and lead an internal HR function for a growing professional services organization. This is a newly created, standalone HR role-ideal for a strategic yet hands-on HR professional who can own all HR operations while also managing day-to-day tasks.
The HR Manager will ensure that attorneys and staff are supported, that policies and programs remain current, and that the firm upholds a strong, inclusive culture. The role requires someone who enjoys both high-level decision making and rolling up their sleeves to handle detailed administrative work when needed.
Key Responsibilities
HR Operations & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures.
- Manage the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and offboarding.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Maintain and update HR records and personnel files.
- Manage all HR-related queries and serve as the primary point of contact for staff.
Payroll & Benefits
- Oversee payroll processes in coordination with the accounting and finance team.
- Liaise with external payroll/benefits providers to ensure accuracy and timely processing.
- Administer employee benefit programs, including health insurance, HSA, 401(k), and leave policies.
- Ensure benefit packages remain competitive, coherent, and up to date.
Culture, DEI & Engagement
- Lead and support DEI initiatives to foster an inclusive and welcoming workplace.
- Oversee employee engagement and retention efforts.
- Support firm culture initiatives, office communications, and internal events.
Employee Relations
- Serve as a trusted advisor to attorneys and staff; handle employee relations matters with professionalism and discretion.
- Provide guidance to leadership on HR best practices and organizational development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional HR experience.
- Strong background in HR operations, employee relations, recruitment, benefits administration, compliance, and culture-building initiatives.
- Experience with HRIS and payroll systems.
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.
- Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on within a one-person HR department.
Preferred
- HR Certification: PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP.
- Experience in a professional services or law firm environment (preferred, not required).
